The huge $1.5bn (AED5.5bn) development is spread across 334,450m2, and includes a 260, 128m2 regional shopping centre anchored by two US-based department stores, Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s. The development contains 400 retail stores, 145 restaurants and cafés including a number of high profile retailers will also be located in the mall, including a 35,000 sq ft Zara store and a 21-screen Vox Cinemas with IMAX. The project comprises nine storeys of development: four levels below Al Maryah Island’s elevated road system and five storeys above; while to the project’s rear are two large bridge spans linking across to the existing car parks structures for the Sowwah Square and The Galleria development. SESC worked as the commissioning engineer and TAB team for the project. The scale of the project in regard to size of the internal spaces was the main challenge, but the fact all SESC teams are IPAF qualified meant we could access units in the highest spaces without the need for external assistance with scissor lifts and booms.
